Giving Back to the Community

At Mecca Design, our work goes beyond crafting eye-catching displays and successful event activations. We believe in the power of giving back to the community, and sometimes, the opportunities to do so come from thinking strategically about the resources we use.

turning a project into a donation opportunity

Recently, we had the pleasure of working on an exciting project during the 2024 MLB All-Star Game. Our client, an experiential branding agency, hired us to create a dynamic activation for Rawlings at Lids, a popular sports retailer. The centerpiece of the display was a striking "glove wall" featuring 40 Rawlings baseball gloves, designed to capture the attention of attendees and draw them into the experience.

But as we planned the activation, a question arose: What happens to the materials after the event? Instead of simply storing or discarding the gloves, we saw an opportunity to make a positive impact.

thinking beyond the activation

By thinking ahead and considering the future of the materials we use, we can create solutions that benefit not just our clients but also the community. In this case, the gloves became more than just a part of the event—they became tools to help young athletes grow their love for the game.

Strategic foresight allowed us to turn an activation into something more meaningful. It’s not just about fabricating eye-catching displays; it’s about finding ways to extend the value of those materials in a way that aligns with our values. For us, giving back is part of who we are, and this donation is just one example of how we strive to leave a positive mark on the communities we touch.

partnering with local youth organizations

With the support of our longtime partner, Gerry Mecca, a coach with the Texas Rangers Youth Baseball Organization, we connected with the Texas Rangers Youth Academy. This program helps introduce young players to the game of baseball and provides resources to foster their skills, both on and off the field. It was the perfect match for our donation of the Rawlings gloves.

After the MLB All-Star Game activation was complete, we were proud to donate all 40 gloves to the academy. This simple gesture allowed us to extend the life of our materials, while also supporting youth development in our local community. The gloves are now in the hands of kids who might not otherwise have had access to top-notch gear, giving them the tools they need to pursue their love for the game.

why strategic planning matters

This story highlights the importance of thinking ahead in design and activation projects. At Mecca Design, we understand that the materials we use can have a second life. By considering where our products and displays go after an event, we can turn what might otherwise be waste into something valuable for the community.

Our donation to the Texas Rangers Youth Baseball Academy shows that strategic planning and ethical design can go hand in hand. Whether it's donating equipment to young athletes or finding other meaningful ways to give back, we aim to make a lasting impact beyond the immediate success of an event.
